Commissioners of oaths

Having a document sworn by a commissioner of oaths involves taking an oath or making a solemn declaration under the supervision of an authorized public officer. The commissioner of oaths verifies the identity of the person who must take the oath or declaration, reads the document and ensures that the person understands its content. Then the person takes an oath or makes a solemn declaration confirming that the document is true and correct to the best of their knowledge. Once the document has been sworn, the Commissioner affixes his seal and signature to the document, which gives it probative and legal force. Documents that need to be sworn often include affidavits, sworn statements, birth or marriage certificates, legal documents, immigration documents, and travel authorizations for minors.
